Black Forest is part of a 1,000 square mile area east of I25 just north of Colorado Springs known as the "Pineries" for the Ponderosa Pines that cover the region. The area was first settled by Ute and Comanche Indians, later by Kiowas Indians and then by Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians. White settlers began to settle the region in the late 1850s. Lumber from Black Forest was used to build Denver and Colorado Springs. Students in this area attend District 20 and District 49 schools.
